Dean Guevara had a very informative presentation that included this slide of two special awardees. Unfortunately, Joe could not be here because of aprevious commitment in the USA. But he will be here on june 26 to receive the UPAA award for lifetime achievement, the only awardee in that top category. Asteeg talaga ang brod na ito, collector ng mga top awards. Sana transferrable and awards. Joe, when we have this Beta Epsilon Archives room, let us have your top award trophy cloned and exhibited there. |
![]() Dong Salazar was not able to attend the May 28 Awards Night because he was abroad, so he got his Abueva creation 2 weeks late.
Dong, that trophy is to remind you that you still have more challenges and hard work ahead of you -- di pa tapos ang payback mo. That is why, unlike the laurel of olden times, you cannot sit on your trophy (which is nice of National Artist Abueva). That goes for the other MOA awardees. |

At the height of martial law, then very popular TV host and much younger Ariel Ureta made a joke about the slogan of Marcos' Bagong Lipunan, "Sa ikauunald ng bayan, disiplina ang kailanga."
He made the unfortunate substitution of "bisikleta" for "disiplina" and landed in detention. It must have been traumatic for Ariel because this time he never made a joke about this top raffle prize of an electric bike donated by Brod and MOA Mon Castillo's Tronix company. |

BE NEWS
BETANS HAD A GRAND TIME AT THE
COE CENTENNIAL ALUMNI HOMECOMING ON JUNE 13
by Lito Manahan
June 14, 2010 HIGHLIGHTS:
1) First of all, let us congratulate our four brods who made it to the 2011 Board Of Trustees of the UPAE - DING PORTUGAL, NIKKI VILLASENOR, ROMAN BUENAFE and CHICHO MANTARING. We fielded four candidates and all won. So the 2011 BOT will have 6 Betans including holdover trustees CONRAD FAJARDO and BERNIE ABIS. BE has a controlling minority in the board. There were 7 slots to be filled up and we got 4 of them. Thanks to OJIE ALZONA who orchestrated the whole campaign. A display of "betan-power". As a gesture of unity, it would be a positive signal if a Betan nominated a TA as the next president of UPAE. O hayan ROMAN, may assignment ka na.
2) Several seniors where in attendance. Seen among the brods were: DAVE CONSUNJI, CESAR BUENAVENTURA, DING ABIS, MIKE ESCOTO, JOE ARVISU, CHITO RECTO, NICK PENA, JABBY JAZMINES, JUN BERBA, JOE CAPARAS, DENNIS QUINTO, REY BAUTISTA, BOY DE LEON, DONG SALAZAR. Did I miss anyone earlier than batch '60?
3) The emcee acknowledged the support that the fraternities extended to the success of the centennial. They were named one by one. BETA EPSILON (loud cheer with shouts of mabuhay), EPSILON CHI (cheer), E=mc2 (silence), TAU ALPHA (cheer). Then to the surprise of everyone, FRAULINE was called and members were asked to go up the stage. Sabi ng isang brod na katabi ko, "Fraternity na rin pala ang Frauline." Ha! Ha! Ha!
3) Entertainment was provided by ANG4, a singing group composed of PINKY MARQUEZ, ISAY ALVAREZ, BIMBO CERRUDO and DYORGE JAVIER. They serenaded the jubilarians. Before the song for the silver jubilarians, item no. 4 above was done. When ANG4 was about to sing, DYORGE made an impromtu speech. Sabi niya somewhat, "Ang BETA EPSILON, malapit sa puso ko kasi my father was a member of the fraternity. Batch 1948." Palakpakan ang mga betans. Then he faced the area where the brods were and shouted, "Mabuhay ang BETA EPSILON". Syempre sigaw din ng mga brods, "Mabuhay!!". Naluma ang props ni MON RAMIREZ.
4) Easily BETA EPSILON was the biggest group. What with free admission (savings of P1,500) plus a chance to win in the raffle, brods who had no passports just came and were given one courtesy of our generous brods who enrolled in the centennial wall and endorsed their passports to OJIE for other brods to use. This one was well organized. Thank you generous brods.
5) Three waiters kept supplying the brods with beer, lechon baka, lechon baboy and ice cubes. I was wondering why the waiters were very enthusiatic in doing this. I found out later that they were "incentivized" by OJIE, DENI and DRAKE. Kaya pala ang sisipag mag silbe. Ha! Ha! Ha!
6) It rained and while there was a canopy, there were drips here and there. And if you are not good at finding a good location, you will get wet. But that did not dampen the spirit of camaraderia among the brods. Walang umuwi.
7) The photo ops were continous. MON and LEONY were very busy. MON adoped a good idea. He brought a professonal photographer with him (si BING, his nette) so that he can be included in the pictures. Good decision MON.
8) When the program ended, I was suprised to see that the lady emcee (PATRICIA EVANGELISTA) [correction: Fernandez) was in the company of the brods. The brod who brought her there is still a mystery. (The one who did it please confess). A lot of photo ops with her followed - at the reception area and at the engineering steps. Sorry na lang yung mga umuwi na.

Historic gathering of UP engineers to celebrate 100 years of UP Engineering
On Sunday, June 13, UP engineers will gather at the Melchor Hall grounds to celebrate the centennial of the the College of Engineering. It is no ordinary homecoming reunion of UP engineers and friends -- it is a grand celebration and there is reason for it.
The College of Engineering was the 5th college unit established by what was then officially named the American University of the Philippines established during the early American occupation of the country after a bloody war of 10 years..
The UP medical school, the UP Los Banos agricultural school and the arts and sciences school were set up early on and for reasons that were justified by the objective conditions then: health services being a top need of the country at that time; we were -- and still are -- mainly an agricultural country and we needed Filipinos schooled in the scientific ways of farming; and the arts and sciences was for the general education of the Filipinos who would become teachers and leaders of the country.
There were very few Filipino engineers and they were educated abroad, but there were many infrastructure to build, especially highways and bridges and ports to tie-in distant towns and the cluster of islands known as the Visayas. Hence, the need for an engineering school.
Thus was born the UP College of Engineering. As Prof Ilio wrote in his monumental work, "75 Years of Engineering":
"The Board of Regents of the University, in a resolution of June 3, 1910, appointed Mr. W. J. Colbert the acting dean of the UP College of Engineering, effective June 13, 1910, thus virtually creating the College of Engineering on this latter date. Dean Colbert was authorized to prepare the curriculum and select the necessary teaching personnel for the new course. Initially a four-year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with an additional degree of Cvil Engineer upon the completion of an extra year of study was approved."
The greatest accomplishment of the college in its 100 years of existence is the education and training of 16,900 engineers who have helped the country and the world in various ways. The models for those thousands of engineers are the 100 engineers screened to populate the list of 100 Most Outstanding Alumni Engineers, the first among the equals being our brod Dr. Jose B. Cruz, Jr. with Betans having the most number of engineers in the list with 24 brods.
So let us attend the June 13 celebration because we will share in the joy of celebrating a historic day of which Betans have contributed quite a substantial part.
See you all at the June 13 celebration. And we hope to capture into our camera's memory cards images and scenes of the historic and jubilant gathering for our future publications and for future engineers to see. Betan writers should marshal well their nose for news and some trivia in order to write about it for future articles in the manner of "I was there...". Everybody can be a Prof Ilio even if no one has gone to the Iowa creative workshop of Paul Engle as long as he has a story to tell..
Some Quick Facts:
1. The first instructor to be appointed was Mr. Jose Katigbak of the City Engineers' Office of Manila, an instructor in graphics (drawing) on a part-time basis.
2. Twenty-two (22) high school graduates from all over the country enrolled in June 1910. They were all full iskolar ng bayan, paying no tuition fees at all.
3. The first engineering building was the 2-story O'brian residence, where PhilamLife now stands at UN Avenue and corner MYOrosa.

Here is the story on
the lady emcee that was "kidnapped" to be the sweetheart of the night. Si
OJIE ALZONA pala ang culprit. Sorry. My mistake in her surname. FERNANDEZ
pala at hindi EVANGELISTA.

mentioned the three brods kasi I saw them make bunot at nag abot sa mga
waiters. ADJIE, there is nothing to correct. Your narration is
