July 20, 2010
The memorial service for our departed Brod Ric Quebral, BE’49 pushed
through as planned Monday evening, July 19, 2010. There were only 16 brods
at the appointed time (7 PM), but start on time we did. Maybe it was
providential that there were only a few of us because the funeral parlor
was standing room only after we all got in.
Resident Brother Chaplain Rellan Castro started the memorial service, and
he was effective in quieting the crowd and setting the solemn mood. During
the roll call, Brod Joe Arvisu answered in behalf of departed brod Ric
Quebral after the latter’s name had been called three times. Joe was first
eulogy speaker. The other speakers:
Egbert Abiad read a brief biography of Ric as prepared by a granddaughter
of Ric. It also served as a good opportunity to introduce the wife Reinita,
and their six children who were all present: Joseph (a medical doctor),
Ray (a Ph.D. in geology), Annie (BE Sweetheart in 1980), Mia (an
architect), Gerry (BE 84, and a Toronto, Canada resident), and Ricky (just
arrived from France).
BEAI President Deni Cuayo read the emailed message of Brod Respi.
Resident Brother Recorder read a shortened version of the “Definition of a
Gentleman” by John Henry Cardinal Newman.
Ernie Tabujara and Pol Abis were the last two speakers. All the
contemporaries of Ric- Joe, Respi, Ernie and Pol- said that Ric was a very
quiet, studious fellow. He can be counted on to do the tasks assigned to
him, and that he was a gentleman.
Overall, I had the impression that our memorial service made the Quebral
family feel good. I was seated not far away from Annie, and I saw her
blush every time it was mentioned that she had been fraternity sweetheart.
Brod Joey Villar ‘81 was late for the roll call, and Cesar Yńiguez '65
must have arrived after I left. The memorial service was over by 7:35 PM,
and some of the older brods (myself included) left right after condoling
with the family at the end of the service.
